Feels like they just go to waste most of the time.

Answer:

Wizards just don’t make great use of the bonus action. There are some bonus action spells but nothing that you’d want to use every turn, and you can give him an item with a bonus action ability attached to it (such as the Boots of Speed). That’s about it.


If him not having a bonus action he can use every turn is that much of an issue, you could multiclass him into Rogue for 2 levels so that he can Dash, Disengage or Hide as a bonus action although I wouldn’t recommend it.
