Why does Lae'zel hate Astarion?!
Today I discovered something really funny, and I can't understand the "lore" or reasoning behind the approval/disapproval she shows. It's about the interaction with Gandrel, the Gur who's chasing Astarion.
If you hand Astarion over to Gandrel, Lae'zel approves. But if you kill Gandrel to protect Astarion, she disapproves!.
The funny part is that days earlier, she actually asked Astarion if he would sleep with her. It happened during one of those random camp interactions while walking. Astarion rejected her, politely, but clearly sarcastic. Not exactly subtle ?.
Now, I know her approval/disapproval probably has nothing to do with that interaction, but it's funny to imagine that she was a bit salty about his answer. and now she hates him.
But speaking seriously, can someone explain why she approves of betraying one of our own party members?
Question from user LeiN_Muffin at BaldursGate3 at reddit.com.
Answer:
LaeZel doesnt hate Astarion at all. In fact, she even sleeps with him if neither of them are romanced. Yes, you are right - in their banter, if Astarion is romanced, she will even ask him why he didnt try to seduce her.
Its just that a lot of approvals in this game make no sense and often contradict the actual writing. Shart simultaneously approves of saving Arabella, standing by doing nothing while Kagha kills her and praising Kagha for killing her. Laezel is vocally very against Shart killing Aylin, yet, she approves. Minthara HATES Lorroakan (just like any other wizard) and is very vocally loud about it, she is like: Dont you dare sell Aylin to him! multiple times. Yet she approves of doing it and disapproves when you save Aylin from him. Laezel and Minthara both approve when you tell Astarions siblings they can take him to Cazador, even though they both express their desire to kill Cazador and protect Astarion. Wyll approves of killing innocents in the Colony by +5. Laezel and Minthara both disapprove when you save Scratch from that awful abusive dog lady, yet if Scratch is missing, they both say that they liked the dog. Im not saying that every single approval is wrong, but people are not aware of how often it contradicts dialogues and even itself. People might say that Shart or Astarion are just lying to you, but its absolutely clear that Laezel is very straightforward and doesnt ever do it. So it makes absolutely no sense when her lines directly contradict her approvals. There are TONS of examples like that. Sorry to say, I love Larian as much as the next guy, but they did absolutely shit job with approval system, its quite clear they never cared about it and focused on other things. A lot of approvals are just leftovers from EA. For example, Wyll still has his goblin-hater unhinged sadistic approvals even though his character was entirely rewritten.
