Why is Shadowheart so…. loved?
Posted On: November 30, 2023

Hear me out, I’m not trying to shart (hehe) on her character or anything. I just kind of find her annoying? I think a lot of it might be due to the fact that she was overhyped to me before I played and I just found her to be a bit of a bitch. Why are people so obsessed with her? Is it a “she’s pretty and edgy” thing or do yall have genuine reasons to love her? Give me reasons to like her, aside from goth mommy, I’m begging.

Question from user simonautical at BaldursGate3 at reddit.

Answer:

Her character arc is appealing to many.

Shes a cult survivor. Watching her grow past it and blossom into her own person, if you take a specific path, can be very rewarding, and its an arc that is fully on display even when youre not romancing her.

It helps that this is one of the characters where you are more rewarded the more you travel with - interact with her, because to get her good paths, you get points from certain conversations and interactions with the world (she has multiple hidden point systems that arent simply based on her approval level). If you dont interact with her as much, shes more likely to go down a darker path. So its a bit of a self-reinforcing loop: people who like Shadowheart from the get-go are more likely to get her to bloom into her good ending by using her own agency. She can choose to be good because youve been walking beside her all along.
