New player here - does shadowheart suck early game?
Posted On: November 15, 2024

I’m playing on Tactician. I thought healing would be nice to have but because it’s limited by having to long rest (and I’m trying to save camp supplies) I am very conservative with it. I feel like doing damage would just be better, but she has a fireball cantrip with 10 INT lmao or the radiance one that is a 1d8…. .

She feels very underwhelming and I wonder if I’m better off shelving her until later? I am a level 4 Warlock, with Laezel, Karlach, and I think I’m gonna sub Asterion in for more damage .

Edit: too many comments to reply to but just want to say thank you, I was indeed thinking of her in a very limited capacity and appreciate the insight of getting more use out of her.

Question from user IWillFlakeOnOurPlans at BaldursGate3 at reddit.com.

Answer:

Think of a DND cleric as a swiss army knife. They might not have the best tools in any single capacity outside of healing, but they can always contribute to any situation. A trap that many people fall into, that you seem to be as well, is that healing is what theyre meant to do as spell casters. Spell based healing should be more of a last option. .

If you look at her level 1 spell list, her best healing spell is 1d8+Wis bonus, or roughly 3-11 healing. Thats nice, but for the same spell slot she could also cast Inflict Wounds, which is 3-30 damage, Guiding Bolt, which deals 4-24 damage and grants Advantage, making the next attack from anyone on that target easier to hit. Both are going to be better than healing unless that character absolutely needs healing now. You could also cast Command to make an enemy waste a turn, saving as much damage as you could heal or more, Bless to make your companions attacks more accurate and save them from status effects by enhancing their saving throws, or Bane to cripple an enemy. All of those options are more impactful than her healing until characters are in immediate danger of being downed.
