Answer:
I always got the impression that Astarion was always an asshole even before he became a vampire, and being abused by Cazador just made him worse. .
With that said you can fix him by having him not ascend and free the other spawns, and he learns to become comfortable with who he is and basically becomes a vigilante. I like that ending for him a lot.
