What exactly are Paladins?
Hi everyone. I'm completely knew to Baulder's Gate and the DnD world. So I was wondering if someone could explain a few basic things to me:.
I'm currently a drow lolth sworn bard and I've just finished the Emerald Grove quest. And while it's fun I'm thinking of switching my class with the guy at the camp given it's not very expensive to do, and I'm thinking of going Paladin.
Now, when I think 'Paladin' I think of some kind of knight but for a holy order or a specific god. Does a Lolth sworn paladin 'make sense' in the world of DnD? If so, which of the 'sub-classes' would fit this character?
I've also heard about a class called 'Oath breaker?' Is that more of a narrative thing, or is that it's own subclass with its own abilities?
Because I'm trying to be a shitty, self interested bastard. The kind of person who would sell arsenic to a blind woman under the guise that it's baby formula for the one small price of her family savings. I like being able to solve problems outside of combat by persuasion, lying to, and manipulating people. Would this make me an oath breaker, even if I was sworn to an evil goddess like Lolth?
Just wondering if this kind of character makes narrative sense, and what I should keep in mind if I decide to do this change.
Thank you!.
Question from user Raspint at BaldursGate3 at reddit.com.
Answer:
Paladins dont swear an oath to a god. They swear an oath to do something, and the strength of that oath gives them power.
.
If you want to be Oathbreaker, pick Oath of the Ancients. It breaks if you so much as breathe wrong, which lets you be and Oathbreaker.
